Whether you have dreams of exploring the rugged Australian outback or taking a short weekend trip away to the nearby caravan park, avid campers would undoubtedly enjoy the luxuries of camping in a caravan.
The question then is, with a plethora of caravan layouts and designs, what model of caravan suits your camping style? Enter the era of Pop-Top caravans.
Hybrid Caravans, also known as Pop-top caravans, have recently become the best-selling model of caravans. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or just starting your camping adventures, a pop-top caravan has just enough unique features for everyone.
Gone are the days of the traditional caravan, with upwards of 3m high bodies and over 7.5m in length, owning a full-sized caravan is now becoming a costly hobby. With smaller roads, lower garage roofs, plus the increase in fuel prices, the cost of owning a full-sized caravan is only increasing.
On the other hand, a Pop-top caravan has the best of both worlds. With some Pop-Tops measuring just 6m in length and 2.2m in height, Pop-Tops have quickly become a camper’s dream. Several key features of a Pop-top include, as the name suggests, a popping or extendable roof, fold-out or slide-out beds and customised heights.
Many Pop-top caravans now include the ability to automatically lift the Pop-top roof and bed, ensuring less time setting up and more time starting the campfire. These pop-top caravans are also incredibly functional. Most manufacturers use waterproof canvas to cover the open roof, with most pop-top models also including zipped windows, fly screens and storage pockets to ensure that the area popped open is fully utilised. Imagine having a caravan that measures just 2.2m in height, which can expand automatically to a full 3m with the flick of a button, providing essentially a full-sized caravan when fully set up.
Other benefits of a Pop-top also include, but are not limited to, lighter tare mass, decreased fuel consumption, and lower entry price point. Despite the obvious downsides, including increased exposure to the element due to the canvas walls, we are still trying to camp, aren’t we?
Often, pop-top caravans also include a fold-out or slide-out bed. In roughly 2 minutes, campers will be able to enjoy a queen or king-sized bed, which converts back into a compact travel-sized box after use. These convertible beds also have gas struts, lockable latches and weather-proof seals to ensure there is minimal difference between a non-convertible and convertible bed.
In summary, Pop-tops are fast becoming a camper’s favourite adventure companion, with their accessible price point, customisable structural features, and rugged exterior creating a new model of caravan for all to enjoy.
