Thanks to Woolies and Coles stocking Easter eggs and hot cross buns super early, Aussies have known that Easter is close by for a while now. Now that it’s April, you should celebrate the long weekend the Easter Bunny has provided us with by going on a camping trip.
Everyone loves a long weekend, but most places are shut, especially on Good Friday, leaving you with nothing to do. I’m sure you’re well and truly sick of watching your Wiggles and Pokemon DVDs that your kids love for the millionth time, so why not make the best of the long weekend, and go camping somewhere? Mars Campers can recommend some top Easter festivities located near camping sites for you to enjoy Easter and enjoy staying in the bush at the same time.
Having said all that, the problem with going away on long weekends is that everyone else has the same idea. Easter is a hectic time of year for motels and resorts, and unfortunately campsites too, so try to book everything well in advance. But don’t let that put you off trying to enjoy your Easter.
Not too far from Canberra is the small town of Adaminaby, situated near Lake Eucumbene, the Snowy Mountains, and Mt Kosciuszko. With such scenic places nearby and the Big Trout sculpture in town, it makes sense that you’d want to check these places out. You can do some bushwalking and fishing while checking out the mountain scenery or do some skiing and snowboarding on Mt Kosciuszko itself or the Mount Selwyn Ski Fields.
As far as the town’s Easter fair goes, head along to Denison Street so you can have a look around the market and listen to the live music before and after the parade. To keep your kids entertained, get them onto the pie eating and tug-of-war contests, or interact with the animals at the petting zoo. Nearby camping sites:
Not too far from Adaminaby, and even closer to Mt Kosciuszko is Thredbo, a ski village known throughout Australia. Picture hundreds and thousands on fairy bread; the bread, in this case, is Thredbo, and once ski season starts, hundreds and thousands of wannabe skiers head their way.
Speaking of children’s food, Thredbo’s Easter festival has an Easter egg hunt on Easter Sunday with over 5,000 eggs for the kiddies to find. There’s also a Golden Easter Egg Hunt for the grown-ups that day with a jackpot bunny that’s worth $5,000!
Besides looking for all those chockies, there are heaps of activities for you and the little ones to do. There are hiking trails around Mt Kosciuszko, where you can also bike around the mountain. Or if you want to see the scenery without making with less effort, there are chair lifts available too. Nearby camping sites:
Along the NSW south coast is the town of Ulladulla; despite the word “dull” appearing in its name, there’s nothing dull about their Blessing of the Fleet Festival on Easter Sunday. There’s the Milton Ulladulla Ex Servo’s Parade along the Princes Highway and many market stalls, showbags, and rides around town. The Kids’ Zone is situated around the Ulladulla Civic Centre to give the little ones something to do.
The Bannisters Beach Games at the harbour foreshore give the whole family games to play together. Whether your lot are into three-legged races, spaghetti eating contests, tug-o-war, or egg-and-spoon races, you’ve got an exciting challenge ahead.
Besides the Easter fun, the Ulladulla area has plenty for you to check out. Swim in the beautiful waters around Burrill Lake, Mollymook Beach, Lake Conjola, or Tabourie Lake. Or if you’re more interested in seeing the local flora and fauna while having a stroll, check out the South Pacific Heathland Reserve.

The Tarra Festival is Yarram is Gippsland’s biggest event throughout the year, and they certainly go all out with it. The festival starts with an hour-long parade on the main street consisting of horses and carriages, vintage cars, school floats, and even tanks.

Here the kids can enjoy time with animals at the petting zoo or ride a pony, play tug-o-war or jump around in a jumping castle, or, of course, go on an Easter egg hunt! If you and your family want to experience a bit of the Aussie country lifestyle, then the Easter In The Country festival in the south-west Queensland town of Roma is as country as it gets. Celebrated over five days, this renown event greatly demonstrates the country lifestyle. Regardless of whether you’re craving a leisurely experience or to have a few thrills, this festival can offer you both of these extremes.
Saturday morning starts with the Watpac Street Parade that goes down McDowall Street with all sorts of floats on show. But it wouldn’t be a proper bush getaway without some country music on Saturday and the Iron Jack Pro Rodeo on Sunday. Other animal shenanigans include the goat races on Sunday arvo.

Being the capital city of Australia, it’s only fitting that Canberra goes all out with celebrating Easter. The National Folk Festival showcases over a hundred concerts, with both contemporary and traditional music playing, guaranteeing you’ll hearing some grouse tunes. There’ll also be plenty of tasty grub on offer, as there are over 30 food vendors and themed bars around.
In terms of the entertainment for the whole family, there are circus performers who’ll do some great tricks. There is also the KidzFest side of the festival that, as the name suggests, is designed to keep the little ones amused.
If you want to see what’s beyond Canberra’s city limits, then check out Cotter River or Gibraltar Creek that contains historical Aboriginal campsites. If you want to explore a bigger piece of this capital city’s territory, then Namadgi National Park is a top choice that borders Kosciuszko National Park.
