Camping Treats and Camping Feasts for Less than $10

Spending just $10 on a campsite meal seems easy, right? If you answered yes then we’ll have to assume you’ve never been camping!

Camping is a whole lot of fun, but it raises plenty of food challenges. How do you transport eggs safely or make good coffee fast? It can be tempting to give up and shout counter-meals at the pub for the whole family, but that’s certainly not cheap and it adds up quickly, we’re not all rich now are we?

Going camping doesn’t have to mean eating rough or sticking to simple meals. On the contrary – the campfire creates a host of wonderful food opportunities that just aren’t the same when done at home. There’s just one thing that you have to do: go prepared.

The following camping food hacks will help you enjoy delicious food by the side of the fire while reducing cooking and cleaning time and costs. Enjoy!

Shakshuka - One Pot Camping Recipe

    Serves 2 | Prep time: 10 minutes | Cooking time: 15 minutes

    • 1 tbsp olive oil
    • 1 small onion, chopped
    • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
    • 1 tsp ground cumin
    • 1 tsp paprika
    • 1/2 tsp chilli flakes
    • Pinch of cayenne pepper
    • 1 can chopped tomatoes,
    • ½ capsicum, chopped
    • 2 free-range eggs
    • 200 grams of chorizo (optional – but delicious!)
    How it’s done:
    1. Cut up the veggies and add the olive oil, onion and garlic on camping stove.
    2. Add spices, then stir for 30 seconds to coat the onion and garlic.
    3. Add the capsicum and fresh tomato. Cook for a couple of minutes until soft.
    4. Add canned tomatoes. Reduce the heat and let everything simmer for about 5 minutes until the sauce starts to thicken.
    5. Bring to boil. Crack the eggs into the sauce and reduce heat to a simmer. Once the eggs are in, cover and let cook until the whites are set.
    6. Once the egg whites are set, you’re good to go. Serve with bread. If you’re feeling fancy and have the extra ingredients with you, top with parsley and feta.
    Breakfast Burritos

    Breakfast Burrito

    Serves 1 | Prep time: 10 minutes | Cooking time: 15 minutes

Sometimes when you’re camping, especially during the winter months, the only thing that can motivate you out of your warm toasty bed is the idea of a warm, hearty breakfast! And the only thing better than a burrito, is a breakfast burrito!

You can even go one step ahead and prepare your burritos before leaving for your trip, now how’s that for organised?

Simply scramble some eggs as you normally would and throw in some of your favourite ingredients, we’ve listed a few to get you started:

    • Bacon
    • Chorizo
    • Ham
    • Capsicum
    • Beans
    • Fetta
    • Tomatoes
    • Mushrooms
    • Taco Seasoning
    • Onion
    • Chives
    How it’s done:

We’re going to assume you know the fundamentals of cooking scrambled eggs and have thrown in your choice of ingredients, either from the list above or your own concoction. For light and fluffy scrambled eggs, remove them from the flame just before you think they’re ready as the eggs will continue to cook for a few more moments after.

Once you’ve cooked them to your liking and they’ve cooled down a bit, grab a tortilla or wrap and layer some cheese down before adding your scramble. Waiting for the eggs to cool and layering the cheese down first should help you avoid weakening the wraps and having it all fall apart when you go to eat it. This can never be guaranteed though!

Double-wrap the burrito in foil nice and tight and keep them in the freezer until you leave for your trip. When you’re ready for deliciousness, place these foil-wrapped bad-boys onto hot coals in/near the fire and cook for 10 –15 minutes, turning once during.

A real bonus of doing it this way is that you can customise what you cook to the tastes of everyone in your group. Put in whatever ingredients you want. If someone in the group is a vegetarian, a meat-free option can easily be made for them. Someone doesn’t like onions? No worries!

    Campfire Mushrooms

    Serves 4 | Prep time: 10 minutes | Cooking time: 15 minutes

    • 500 grams button mushrooms, cleaned and cut into thick slices
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil.
    • 3 tablespoons butter.
    • 2 tsp minced Garlic
    • 1 sprig fresh rosemary (optional)
    How it’s done:
    1. Place a cooking grate above the flames in your campfire or fire pit, place a frying pan on top and add olive oil and butter.
    2. Once the pan is hot, add the garlic and rosemary, mixing while you add the mushrooms. Cook for around 3-5 minutes, stirring intermittently until soft.
    3. If you want to add red wine, spring onion, thyme, paprika or anything to your liking you can do so now, but this basic version we’re giving you is delicious on its own!
    4. Once all the mushrooms are soft, remove from heat, dish up and eat!
